Home Green Methanol: The Final Hurdle for 100% Bio-Based Methyl Caproate
Article | 13 November 2025
Oleochemicals
In the pursuit of true sustainability, transparency is key. For Methyl Caproate, this means being honest about the entire molecule. While it's labeled "bio-based," a critical look at its chemistry reveals a challenge that the industry is now racing to solve. This level of supply chain transparency is what separates a simple commodity trader from a true strategic partner. At Tradeasia International, we believe that long-term sustainability in the oleochemical market means confronting the entire carbon footprint, including reagents.
Methyl Caproate is formed from two inputs: Caproic Acid (from palm) and Methanol. The Caproic Acid portion is 100% bio-based and can be RSPO-certified. But Methanol, which accounts for approximately 28% of the ester's mass, is the problem. Over 95% of the global Methanol supply is 'grey methanol,' derived from fossil fuels. This challenge highlights the strength of the palm-based feedstock, which already provides a 100% bio-based, certifiable foundation, as seen on palm-chemicals.com. The palm industry has done its part; the focus now shifts to the reagent.
R&D is now focused on "bio-methanol" and "green methanol". While this green supply is currently less than 1% of the total, new projects are projected to add over 8 million tons of capacity by 2027. This unlocks a new, ultra-premium product: a "100% Bio-Based" ester (RSPO Palm + Bio-Methanol). Market data shows CPGs are willing to pay a 20-40% premium for ingredients with this verified low-carbon, 100% bio-based story.
